Ah, longhorn again

March 28th, 2005 in Mac OS X |

Considering that I just 2 posts ago found a reason to praise Microsoft
I thought I’d take this chance for a small rant against them:

Mr.
Paul Thurrot, grandfather of of Pro-M$ Speak and commander of
battilions of blended microsoft-lovers has published a nice overview of
the comming longhorn roadmap. including new screenshots:

The new Explorer is, functionwise, closer to the Mac OS X Finder
than to the current Explorer, as it seems. There is the Search Bar,
there seems to be some sort of Breadcrumb-Bar and the clumsy
space-wasting Menu has been reduced to ‘File’.  The whole window is
themed in a nice Plastic look, and I bet that it’ll look like pure
bliss with added Drop-Shadows and Gl-Effects. But still, most of this
seems to be quite close to what Apple already offers with its Finder.

And I still like the brushed metal more than that plastic look (so blue, reminds me of Eiffel65)

I guess I’m quite happy that I’m able to use a next-gen OS now instead
of in 1.5 years, Apple Hardware is not cheap, but considering that by
the time Longhorn will be on the Shelves Apple is going to be at 10.5,
and there’ll be even more incredible features like spotlight, core
image, expose, quartzgl etc, I think it might be worth the extra money
(although I just had damn luck that I got my G5 machine :) )

In other news: I’m drunk again. Feels great.

Comment support

March 27th, 2005 in Anouncements |

You probably already lost hope in it some time ago – but here it is: Comment support :)

Actually nothing special regarding the complexity of the task, just
about one hour of coding, but well.. I’m currently shifting my
priorities so that spare time is *really* spare time. :)

And, I tried to force myself to use only VIM as an editor in order to add the comment functions, because I really want to extend my VIM-Knowledge. But I’ll write about this at another time as I’m about to leave for a nice party now :)

Ah yeah, my last post had a small bug
for the link wasn’t really a link, you can click it now and read all
the nice info about the Microsoft Typos as I just fixed the bug. Thanks
Andreas for notifiying me.

In other news. I bought the new Chemical Brothers Album, and it damn rocks.

New Microsoft Typefaces

March 24th, 2005 in Web Technologies |

Those of you who are familiar with me and my opinions know that I am
not that of a big Microsoft fan. I usually try to avoid using their
technology wherever possible – not because I bear some sort of personal
grudge against them, but because I like to try new things, and for I
think that currently Microsofts competitors offer more value because
they have to try harder in order to compete. (Think about virii).

That’s the reason why I completely switched to Mac OS X at home, and
Linux (in that case Gentoo) at work. And it works really good. I do
admit that I’m definately very productive in my Microsoft-Free
environment (Although I do have a copy of Internet Explorer running in
a wine-shell in order to do the usual testing & bugfixing).

Now, preparing Longhorn, Microsoft created new Typefaces which are
especially suited for on-screen reading.
I really dig that idea, and
I’ve to admit that I hope that there will be something similar coming
from either Apple or Novell/IBM/Redhad because the current set of
Typefaces on Win/Linux/OSX do certainly contain a broad range of
possible improvements.

With all the upcoming UI-Improvements in Longhorn (Avalon:
Transparencies, Dropshadows, Vector-Interface, Hardware-Accelerated) I
reckon that adding those beautifull new fonts will really help making
Longhorn visually more pleasant for the normal user.

Horray.

March 23rd, 2005 in Uncategorized |

I just returned from a business trip to Munich, and I’ve to concede
that Munich has way more to offer than the Oktoberfest :) I only stayed
for 2 days and most of the time I had to be productive, so I couldn’t
really see too much of the town, but those things I was able to see
yesterday evening during my spare time were really nice :)

Well, apart from that I’ve to admit that I’m a bit drunk now, on the
one hand because I had a small bottle of sparkling wine on the plane
from Munich to duesseldorf, and on the other hand because I drank some
nice wine when I was back home.

Ah yeah: I’ll probably add comment features tomorrow.

been there, done that.

March 18th, 2005 in My Life |

Everything went great. I’d guess that it ran down evern better than
expected. Afterwards I was – once again – quite relieved, and – of
course – damn happy.

That’s why I needed to celebrate somehow. So I went to a small &
nice Student’s party in Enschede yesterday evening. It was really nice,
I met some nice people, and I got so drunk that I woke up with a really
awfull headdache today.

March 16th, 2005 in My Life |

I wanted to do a shitload of stuff this week. Get a shitload of things done, and stuff.

However, I couldn’t do so, that is, i couldn’t even be online and have
some nice chats with some of you. That is, I couldn’t even read
Slashdot during the recent days.

Yeah, that’s what I’d call busy.

I’m currently usually from 7am to 10pm at work, and in those 7 spare hours, I try to sleep :)

All this should be over on friday :) At least I hope so…

I’ll keep you updated ;)

thanks

March 10th, 2005 in My Life |

I really hadn’t thought that some people actually read this blog.
Thanks. And please don’t feel concerned anymore, I reckon I’m better
now. Sometimes bad days or even bad weeks happen without an actual
reason, however in my case that striking blogposting of mine had a
reason.

I’m not gonna talk about the actual event that happened, but let me
compare it with the feeling one might have if he just suddenly realized
that he trashed his Lottery Jackpot Card down the drain. And that led
to that unlovely me questioning myself, my thoughts and my decitsion.

But. As I said, I’m feeling better now and, frankly, I wouldn’t even
have the time to think about this now as I’m so fucking busy at work.
It seems I have to work all weekend :(

We’re in the process to develop software which is necessary for us to
get an approval on monday or wednesday which in turn will allow us to
work on a very very big project. The bad part is that

1. The timeframe to research and develop the above-mentioned software is far too short

2. The softwares requirements are so difficult that we couldn’t develop these features in the (1.) timeframe.

So we asked for help today and it seems we’ll be able to get some :) Which is great news in those dark times.

I’ll try to update this blog more often now as I need to improve my
english language skills as it really went down the drain since I
stopped chatting years ago :)

(but i guess you already figured that)

love you.ez
